Akagera National Park is one of Rwanda’s premier safari destinations, showcasing a captivating mix of savannah, woodlands, and wetlands. In contrast to the misty montane forests of Volcanoes National Park, Akagera features vast plains, rolling hills, and lakes that sustain a rich diversity of wildlife. Managed in partnership with African Parks, it has evolved into a thriving conservation area, offering visitors an excellent chance to see the Big Five—lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo—along with numerous other species. These successful conservation efforts have significantly increased wildlife populations, making every safari visit rewarding and memorable.

Since 2010, Akagera has made remarkable strides in wildlife protection. Anti-poaching initiatives, aerial patrols, a specialized canine unit, and dedicated rhino trackers have strengthened security across the park. The reintroduction of lions from South Africa and 18 eastern black rhinos has restored ecological balance and enhanced the park’s appeal. Visitors can observe large herds of buffalo, elephants, zebras, giraffes, and antelopes, as well as over 490 bird species. A boat cruise on Lake Ihema provides close encounters with hippos, Nile crocodiles, and a variety of waterbirds, adding a unique aquatic dimension to the safari experience.
