Amboseli National Park sits in southern Kenya, close to the Tanzanian border, northwest of Mount Kilimanjaro and about 220 km southeast of Nairobi. It stands out as one of Kenya’s most iconic safari destinations, celebrated for its impressive elephant herds and breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro, whose snowcapped peak rises majestically across the border. At dawn, the mountain glows softly in pink and gold, while at dusk, it casts a striking silhouette against the fiery sunset sky.


The park features five diverse habitats — open plains, acacia woodlands, thorny bushlands, swamps, and marshes. On the western side, the Ol Donyo Orok massif and the dry Lake Amboseli add dramatic scenery to the landscape. During the rainy season, the lake fills up and attracts numerous migratory birds, while in the dry season, fine alkaline dust from the lakebed can make travel slightly challenging.


Amboseli is rich in wildlife, with elephants as its main attraction. Other commonly seen animals include giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, hippos, wildebeests, impalas, warthogs, and baboons. You may also encounter rare antelope species like the fringe-eared oryx and the graceful gerenuk. Although rhinos are no longer found in the park and predator sightings are less common than in the Masai Mara, Amboseli remains a truly remarkable safari destination in Kenya.
