LAKE MBURO NATIONAL PARK
Lake Mburo National Park spans 260 km², with elevations ranging from 1,220m to 1,828m above sea level. Wetlands cover about 20% of the park, offering a variety of unique game-viewing opportunities by vehicle, boat, mountain bike, horseback, or on foot. Despite its small size, the park is rich in wildlife and serves as an ideal stopover between Kampala and western Uganda’s other protected areas.
The park features diverse habitats including savannah, acacia woodlands, forests, rocky outcrops, swamps, and lakes, supporting wildlife species that are rare or not found elsewhere in Uganda. Birdwatching is particularly rewarding, with acacia and papyrus thriving in the wetlands. Visitors can enjoy the park through boat safaris, guided walks, and cycling adventures in addition to traditional game drives.
Situated in a rain shadow between Lake Victoria and the Rwenzori Mountains, Lake Mburo receives an average of 800 mm of rainfall per year. The climate follows a bimodal pattern, with long rains from February to June and short rains from September to December. While rainfall can be unpredictable, April and November are typically the wettest months. Average temperatures hover around 27.5°C, ranging from 21.5°C to 34°C, with July and August being the hottest months. Early morning and late afternoon safaris are therefore the best times to explore the park.
